Robert Fort lives in an antique oysterman’s cottage on a rock high above the Farm River in Short Beach near New Haven, CT. He kayaks the two miles of shifting habitat from his home on the marsh edge to open Sound in search of birds to photograph. The tide, the run of the current, the wind on the water and the natural motion of the earth combine to create a portrait studio in the open air. He seldom comes home without a catch. He translates these photos into oil drawings that capture the youth he never seems to have abandoned. The naïve quality of the work befits the joy he takes in making it.
